Eric D. Brown - Technology, Strategy, People & Projects: Information Technology Leadership & Alignment

Great post. Hopefully it will open the eyes of more business managers. IT is here to solve problems, and not just what kind of printer to buy or software to use. IT is capable of doing much more (even more than even they think). After all, we are problem solvers, and it makes sense that our problem-solving skills may apply to areas outside of IT. Heads of companies owe it to bring IT into their business decisions these days. Technology is no longer a segregated aspect of the business word.

Training your IT staff on the business lexicon is all well and good…but what about training your non-IT staff on what the IT group does and what it can do for the organization?

I manage an online community devoted to IT pros and this one-way version of business alignment can indeed be very frustrating to IT. Having this work both ways is just good business sense.

Hi Brent - Thanks for the comment...You are correct. Being told by the 'business side' of business to be 'more like them' is very frustrating to anyone in IT. Two-way communication must occur in order to make real progress.
